Started by Paul Theakston in 1992 who's family have been brewing in Masham for 6 generations.
The original T & R Theakston Ltd brewery had been bought by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries in 1987. Paul did not want to join them as he felt that the small brewing life was for him and he also did now want to leave masham.
The brewery is based in Lightfoot Breweries old maltings building. The building had become rundaown after years of neglect and was restored into the current brewery.
They where originally going to apply to use the Lightfoot Brewery name but at the time Scottish & Newcastle Breweries had just applied to use the name. So they looked to what Masham was famous for and settled upon Black Sheep Brewery.
